Why titanium needs its own tooling
Titanium has high tensile strength and a low elastic modulus, and it tends to gall against tool steel. In practice this means more springback than steel, faster tool wear, and a narrow window for die clearance. We watch for small changes in the die during a run and adjust before parts drift out of tolerance.
Grades and processes
| Grade | Type | Typical processes |
|---|---|---|
| Gr.1, Gr.2 | Commercially pure | Blanking, piercing, bending, drawing |
| Gr.5 (Ti-6Al-4V) | Alpha-beta alloy | Blanking, piercing, bending, drawing |
| Gr.23 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI) | Alpha-beta alloy, extra-low interstitial | Blanking, piercing, bending, drawing |
Blanking is available in titanium plate up to 6 mm. Drawing and bending are done in thin-gauge sheet.
Example: deep-drawn cup in Ti-6Al-4V
Sheet thickness 1.5 mm, outer diameter 47.3 mm, depth 45 mm, flange diameter 64.2 mm. Drawn in Gr.5 or Gr.23.
